Sportsmanship

The goal in sportsmanship is not simply to win, but to pursue victory with honor by giving one’s best effort. This requires four key values: fairness, integrity, responsibility, and respect. These translate into civic virtues as well.

OVERVIEW

At the Rose Bowl Institute, we believe that sportsmanship is a fundamental pillar of both athletics and society. Our commitment to recognizing, promoting, and rewarding exemplary sportsmanship extends to all levels of competition and every stakeholder, from athletes and coaches to officials and fans.

Recognizing Excellence. We celebrate individuals and teams who exemplify integrity, respect, and fairness in their actions. Through various programs, we highlight individuals who inspire others to embrace the true spirit of competition.

Promoting Positive Values. Our programs and initiatives educate about the importance of good sportsmanship. By emphasizing teamwork, integrity, and respect, we aim to foster a positive environment that benefits everyone involved.

Awarding Achievement. We also honor those who demonstrate exceptional sportsmanship through awards that recognize both athletic excellence and the principles of fair play. These accolades motivate continued commitment to these vital values.

A Shared Responsibility. Sportsmanship is a collective effort. Coaches, parents, fans, and organizations all play a role in cultivating respect and positivity in sports. We encourage everyone to join us in building a culture that prioritizes integrity and mutual respect.

The Rose Bowl Institute is dedicated to championing sportsmanship in all its forms. By recognizing and rewarding those who embody these values, we strive to create a lasting impact on the sports community and society as a whole. Together, let’s celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship and inspire future generations.

Athletes in the Schools

Through educational programs, focused dialogues, and awards, the Institute leverages the power of sports to unite people around positive sports values and to bridge civic differences through sports.

The Need for Civic Literacy. Many have cited the need in the United States for greater civic literacy at the junior and high school levels. In response to this nationwide need, the Rose Bowl Institute sends athletes into schools to encourage students to embrace sportsmanship as citizenship.

ROSE Table Dialogues

ThRose Table Dialogue on Sportsmanship in Sportscasting, held June 14, 2022, engaged sportscasters and writers to address ways the public can see more acts of sportsmanship in coverage of games and other aspects of the sport. How do sports journalists and game-casters bring these heroic and generous acts into their coverage? What else can they do to advance these positive values in sports while being true to their professions? Variations on this theme will be the subject of Rose Table Dialogues in future years.
